The Last Hurrah

Last week, right before Labor Day weekend, we made a pilgrimage to the land of Canucks for a last hurrah of summer. For several years we have made an annual trip to African Lion Safari to enjoy lazy "wild" animals ignoring us, baboons pooping on the roof of our car, and a frolic in the water park & playground.

Before we went the 1st time, one of my sisters told me to toss some crackers on the roof of our car so the baboons would pay us some attention. I was appalled! Feeding wild animals? NEVER! That was until the baboons totally ignored us for the other people who were tossing them some goodies. Pull out the goldfish crackers.
This year we brought a couple of bananas to entice the little boogers. Before we entered the monkey area, The Lawyer (the one who is sworn to uphold the law) tossed some banana chunks on the roof. Within seconds, a "safari" jeep swooped down on us and instructed us to follow her. Not knowing if we were getting the boot, we started squealing and sweating. She led us to an area and instructed us to exit the park, clean off our car and then re-enter. Thank goodness The Lawyer didn't have to argue our case.

We still tried to entice them with banana.

Ever see a baboon penis? I know, I'm immature.

Emus are none too swift.

For a while, Frances sat on my lap and steered. She was thrilled to be able to "practice" for the real thing, IN SIX YEARS.

And here are the kids (Cousin Big Al came with us) shivering on the boat. Did I mention that it was 62 degrees and rainy???

Next up, the adventure continues in Marine Land. More sugar, less rain.

Come on, how often does one get the unparalleled opportunity of photographing a baboon's penis at close range?
But it's the face on that emu that had me spitting coffee. None too swift indeed.
